Skills Competition Highlights Future Talent

A strong showing of industry involvement and student talent was on display May 4 and 5, 2026 at the Skills Ontario Competition, where automotive service and refinishing students took part in hands-on, timed challenges designed to reflect real-world shop conditions.

The event drew an estimated 40,000 visitors in a single day, with employers, educators and suppliers attending to observe competitors working under pressure while demonstrating technical skill, precision and professionalism.

Among those contributing behind the scenes was Santo Sarta, an industry veteran and member of Lift Auto Group who volunteered his time as a judge. Having worked in the automotive field since the 1980s, Santo said his motivation comes from a long-standing commitment to trades and a desire to encourage more young people to consider careers in the industry.

“Exposing students to this kind of environment is what sparks curiosity,” Sarta said. “When they can see the work firsthand and talk to people in the trade, it helps them understand what a career in autobody repair can really look like.”

He added that sharing real-world experience remains one of the most effective ways to connect with the next generation and highlight the opportunities available in skilled trades.

Students from across Ontario participated in the autobody and refinishing competitions, completing structured, timed tasks that tested both structural and cosmetic repair skills using industry-standard tools and processes.

Santo is also expected to attend the finals later in May which sees top competitors advancing to the Skills Canada National Competition on May 28 and 29, where they may qualify to represent Canada at the international WorldSkills competition.
